3-Phase vs Single-Phase EV Charging in Australia: Which Do You Need?
Share
Short answer: if you're not sure what power supply your home has, it's almost certainly single-phase — that's the standard connection for most Australian houses. A single-phase portable EV charger (2.3kW to 7.4kW) will work for you. A 3-phase charger can charge faster (up to 22kW), but only if your property actually has a 3-phase supply connected, which is more common in larger homes, newer builds, or where it's been specifically requested from the local electricity distributor.
What's the actual difference?
Single-phase and three-phase describe how electricity is delivered from the grid into your property. Single-phase supplies power on one active wire and is the default connection for the vast majority of Australian homes. Three-phase supplies power across three separate active wires, which allows significantly more power to be delivered at once — useful for larger homes, workshops, and fast EV charging.
An EV charger doesn't create extra power out of nothing: it can only draw as much as the supply behind the wall socket allows. That's why the type of power at your property, not just the charger you buy, sets the real ceiling on your charging speed.
How much faster is 3-phase charging?
Etronx's single-phase portable chargers top out at 7.4kW (32A). Our 3-phase portable charger delivers up to 22kW (32A across three phases) — roughly three times faster, adding approximately 120km of range per hour of charging versus a much slower top-up on single-phase. For context, our smallest single-phase model (the 2.3kW "granny charger") is designed for slow overnight charging from a standard 10A household outlet, typically taking 8–12+ hours for a full charge depending on battery size.
Which one do you actually need?
- You're not sure what supply you have, or you know it's single-phase: choose a single-phase charger. Most Australian homes fall into this category, and a 7.4kW single-phase charger will still charge most EVs fully overnight.
- You already have a confirmed 3-phase supply (or are planning to have one connected): the 22kW 3-phase charger will make full use of it and cut charging time significantly.
- You're charging from a standard household power point with no special wiring: the 2.3kW 10A charger is the simplest option — no electrician required.
If you're not sure which power supply your property has, your electricity distributor or a licensed electrician can confirm it before you buy — it's a quick check that avoids ordering a 3-phase charger you can't actually use at full speed.
Etronx portable EV charger range
All Etronx portable EV chargers use the same Type 2 (Mennekes) connector fitted to EVs sold in Australia, are RCM certified, and carry a 2-year warranty:
- 2.3kW single-phase charger (10A household plug) — the simplest overnight option, no electrician needed.
- 7.4kW single-phase charger (32A, 5-pin plug) — faster charging from an industrial-style outlet.
- 7.4kW single-phase charger (32A, 3-pin plug) — same speed, alternate plug format, IP67 rated.
- 22kW 3-phase charger (32A, 5-pin plug) — the fastest option, for properties with a 3-phase supply.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a 3-phase charger if my house only has single-phase power?
You can plug it in, but it will only draw the single-phase power actually available at that outlet — it won't deliver its full 22kW rate without a genuine 3-phase supply behind it. For single-phase properties, one of our 7.4kW single-phase chargers is the more practical choice.
Do I need an electrician to use a portable EV charger?
The 2.3kW 10A model plugs straight into a standard household outlet with no special wiring. The 32A single-phase and 3-phase models use industrial-style plugs, so you'll need the matching outlet installed by a licensed electrician if you don't already have one.
How do I check if I have 3-phase power at home?
Check your switchboard for three incoming active wires (rather than one), or ask your electricity distributor or an electrician to confirm — they can also arrange installation if you'd like 3-phase added.
